I regularly inspect properties where the wiring has simply reached the end of its useful life. Over the years I've found installations with deteriorated insulation, high resistance readings, old aluminium wiring, dated fuse boards without RCD protection, and lighting circuits with no CPC (earth) present at all.
I'm Luke from L J Mullan Electrical, a NAPIT registered electrician covering Banbury, Brackley and the surrounding areas. With over 13 years of experience, I carry out full rewires and partial rewires for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and businesses, ensuring installations are brought up to current standards whilst respecting your property throughout the project.
A rewire is one of the biggest electrical investments you can make in a property, so I believe it's important that you fully understand what's being installed, why it's being installed, and how the work will be carried out before any cables are run.
Back to topNot every property requires a full rewire, which is why I always start with a proper inspection.
Common reasons I recommend a full or partial rewire include:
Many older properties around Banbury and Brackley have had multiple alterations over decades. Often the installation may technically work, but the wiring no longer meets modern standards or provides the level of protection expected today.
Back to topWhen carrying out a rewire, I focus on both safety and workmanship.
I carefully plan cable routes, account for voltage drop, and ensure cables are installed within recognised safe zones. I use oval conduit within walls where appropriate to help protect the wiring and make future cable replacement easier.
I take pride in carrying out neat installations. Walls are chased carefully using professional dust extraction equipment, floorboards are lifted with care and properly reinstated, and I always try to minimise disruption wherever possible.
Once complete, I install a modern consumer unit incorporating:
A rewire should last for many years, which is why getting it right first time matters.
Problems I regularly encounter include:
These issues may not always be visible once the walls are plastered and decorated, but they can create problems for years afterwards.
That's why I take the time to explain exactly what I'm doing and why.
Back to topI only use products and materials that I would be happy to install in my own property.
Typical products include:
Using quality materials helps ensure reliability and reduces the likelihood of future issues.
Back to topI'm NAPIT registered and Part P compliant, with over 180 five-star Google reviews.
Many of my reviews mention communication. I believe customers should know exactly what's happening throughout a project, particularly during larger jobs such as rewires.
When you choose me for your electrical installation, you can expect:
If additional work becomes necessary once the installation has been inspected, I'll always discuss it with you before proceeding.
Back to topEvery rewire is different, which is why I provide quotations following a free survey.
Factors that affect cost include:
Your quotation will include:
Most rewire projects take between 1 and 7 days depending on the size and complexity of the installation.

I'll visit your property, inspect the existing installation, discuss your plans, explain any concerns I've identified and provide clear recommendations. You'll have a full understanding of the work before deciding whether to proceed.
Back to topHow do I know if my house needs a rewire?
Common signs include old fuse boards, rubber or aluminium wiring, no earth present on lighting circuits, poor EICR results or ongoing electrical faults. I can assess the installation during a free survey and advise whether a full or partial rewire is appropriate.
How long does a rewire take?
Most rewires take between 1 and 7 days. The duration depends on property size, accessibility and whether the property is occupied during the work.
Can I live in the property during a rewire?
In many cases yes, although there will be disruption. During the survey I'll explain what to expect and whether temporary arrangements may be beneficial.
Do you issue certificates after the work?
Yes. Every rewire is fully tested and certified upon completion. Building Regulations notification is also completed where required.
What consumer unit do you install?
I typically install Hager or FuseBox consumer units incorporating Type A RCBO protection and Type 2 surge protection to provide modern circuit protection.
Do all old properties need rewiring?
No. Some properties only require a partial rewire or consumer unit upgrade. That's why I always inspect the installation before making recommendations.
Is a rewire covered by a guarantee?
Yes. All rewire work is covered by my 12-month workmanship guarantee.
