At  L J Mullan Electrical, we were recently called out to a property after a customer reported receiving small electric “tingles” from a chrome light switch in their home. While some people may ignore this sort of issue, it should never be overlooked, as it can indicate an underlying electrical fault that could potentially become dangerous.

Customer Receiving Electric Shocks From Chrome Light Switch – Fault Found & Made Safe

As a trusted local electrician based in Kings Sutton near Banbury, we take electrical safety extremely seriously. After attending the property, we carried out fault finding and testing to identify exactly what was causing the issue.

Investigating The Fault

Initially, the chrome switch appeared to be wired correctly when removed from the wall. However, further electrical testing quickly showed something was not right. The switch was only reading around 15 volts instead of the expected 230-240 volts.

This immediately suggested there was a fault elsewhere on the lighting circuit.

As part of our investigation, we traced the circuit further and inspected the ceiling light fitting where the switch was supplied from. Once the fitting was removed, the issue became clear.

The previous electrical connections had been poorly made and wrapped in electrical tape, with loose CPC (earth) connections hidden inside an old damaged ceiling rose. Loose electrical connections like this can lead to overheating, intermittent faults, electric shocks and in some cases even electrical fires.

Making The Installation Safe

After identifying the fault, all unsafe connections were removed and replaced correctly using maintenance-free connectors. The circuit was then fully tested to ensure correct voltage, continuity and earthing throughout.

Once repaired, the chrome light switch was safely receiving the correct 240 volts and all testing confirmed the installation was now safe to use.

This is exactly why electrical testing and fault finding is so important. Faults are not always immediately obvious, and what may appear to be a “small tingle” could actually be a sign of a much larger hidden problem.

Why EICRs Are So Important

This job also highlights the importance of having an EICR carried out on your property.

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is effectively an MOT for your electrics. It helps identify hidden defects, damaged wiring, poor workmanship and safety issues before they become dangerous.

At  L J Mullan Electrical, we regularly carry out EICRs for:

  • Homeowners
  • Landlords
  • Letting agents
  • Rental properties
  • Home buyers
  • Older properties

Many electrical faults remain hidden for years until they eventually cause nuisance tripping, electric shocks, overheating or complete circuit failure. Regular electrical inspections help catch these problems early.

For landlords, EICRs are also a legal requirement in rental properties and help ensure tenants remain safe.

Common Signs You May Need An Electrical Inspection

If you notice any of the following, it may be time to contact a qualified electrician:

  • Electric shocks or tingles from switches or appliances
  • Flickering lights
  • Burning smells from switches or sockets
  • Buzzing noises
  • Frequent tripping electrics
  • Old fuse boards
  • Damaged sockets or switches
  • Lights working intermittently

Even if the issue seems minor, it is always better to have it checked properly by a professional electrician.
