Recognising the importance of reliable, personal electrical services for homeowners and landlords across Banbury, Brackley and Bicester.
Receiving my award for Domestic Electrical Contractor of the Year 2026–2027 at the Prestige Awards was a particularly proud moment for me and a significant milestone for L J Mullan Electrical.
As a small, independent electrical business based in King’s Sutton, near Banbury, I have always believed that being a good electrician is about more than simply completing the electrical work. It is about turning up when you say you will, communicating clearly, respecting people’s homes and giving customers confidence that the job has been done properly.
Having now received the award, it has given me an opportunity to reflect on what I want L J Mullan Electrical to stand for and, more importantly, the difference that a reliable local electrician can make to customers.
From Winning a National Apprenticeship Award to Receiving Industry Recognition
My electrical career has been shaped by hard work, experience and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
Back in 2015, I was honoured to win National Electrical Apprentice of the Year at the Electrical Industry Awards. At that stage of my career, the award recognised the training, effort and technical development that went into becoming an electrician.
Receiving the Prestige Awards’ Domestic Electrical Contractor of the Year award for 2026–2027 feels different. This time, the recognition reflects the business I have built, the service I provide and the reputation I have worked hard to establish with customers.
Both achievements are important to me, but they represent different stages of the journey: developing the skills to become a qualified electrician and then using those skills to build a business that people can trust.
For me, the real measure of success is not simply receiving an award. It is knowing that customers feel comfortable recommending me to their family, friends and neighbours because they have had a positive experience.
Why the Personal Approach Makes a Difference
L J Mullan Electrical is deliberately a small, independent business. I deal directly with customers, from the initial enquiry and quotation through to carrying out the work and answering any questions afterwards.
That continuity matters. When you contact a large company, you may speak to one person, receive a visit from another and then have someone else carry out the work. With my business, customers know who they are dealing with and who is responsible for their electrical work.
I understand that having an electrician in your home can be disruptive, particularly when you are working around family life, children or other commitments. I aim to make the process as straightforward as possible by communicating clearly, treating properties with respect and keeping disruption to a minimum.
I also believe that smaller jobs deserve the same level of care as larger projects. A faulty socket, a new light fitting or an extractor fan that needs replacing might not be a major installation, but it can make a real difference to the person who needs it sorted.
This is one of the areas in which I specialise. I am happy to take on the smaller domestic electrical jobs that can sometimes be difficult for homeowners to get booked in with larger contractors, alongside more extensive inspection, testing and installation work.
Supporting Homeowners with Everyday Electrical Work
Not every customer needs a complete rewire or a major electrical installation. Often, they simply need a dependable electrician who can assess a problem, explain the options and carry out the work professionally.
My domestic electrical services include lighting installations, additional sockets, extractor fans, electrical fault finding and general electrical repairs.
I also carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) and consumer unit replacements, which form a significant part of my work.
For homeowners, these services can help address concerns about the condition and safety of their electrical installation. For landlords, they are an important part of managing rental properties and meeting their electrical safety responsibilities.
My aim is to explain what is needed in plain English, rather than leaving customers confused by technical terminology. If an inspection identifies problems, I explain the findings and discuss the appropriate remedial work. If a consumer unit replacement is recommended, I explain why and what the work involves.
Every property is different, so I believe advice should be based on the condition of the installation and the customer’s actual requirements, rather than automatically recommending the most expensive option.
Helping Landlords and Letting Agents Stay on Top of Electrical Safety
Working with landlords and letting agents is another important part of L J Mullan Electrical.
An EICR helps assess the condition of an existing electrical installation and identifies defects or potential safety concerns that may require attention. In England, private rented properties are generally required to have their electrical installations inspected and tested at least every five years, or sooner where the report requires it.
For landlords, having an electrician who can carry out the inspection, explain the findings and help organise necessary remedial work can make managing a property more straightforward.
I understand that communication and reliability are particularly important when coordinating access with tenants and arranging work around existing bookings. My aim is to provide clear information, carry out the required work professionally and help landlords and letting agents keep their properties electrically safe.
Recognition Built on Trust and High Standards
Alongside the Prestige Awards recognition and my National Electrical Apprentice of the Year award in 2015, I am proud that L J Mullan Electrical has built up more than 200 five-star Google reviews.
Those reviews are especially important to me because they come from customers who have experienced the service first-hand.
I am NAPIT registered, hold Part P qualifications and have £5 million public liability insurance. These are important elements of the reassurance I want to provide when customers invite me into their homes to work on something as important as their electrical installation.
Awards are a fantastic achievement, but I know that trust is earned through the everyday details: responding to enquiries, providing clear quotations, arriving as agreed, working carefully and leaving customers confident in the finished job.
That is the standard I want to maintain, whether I am replacing a single light fitting or completing a consumer unit replacement.
