As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, more homeowners are looking for convenient and cost-effective ways to charge their cars at home. At L J Mullan Electrical, we regularly install EV chargers throughout Banbury and the surrounding areas, and every property presents its own unique challenges.
Recently, we completed a Hypervolt EV charger installation in Banbury for a customer who wanted a practical charging solution without the additional expense of replacing her existing consumer unit or running cables through the inside of the property.
Finding the Right Solution
One of the most important parts of any EV charger installation is carrying out a site survey and discussing the available options with the customer.
In this case, the customer’s existing consumer unit did not have the ideal capacity or spare ways available for a straightforward EV charger installation. While replacing the consumer unit was an option, it would have added significant cost to the project.
The customer was also keen to avoid routing cables internally through the house, which would have involved additional disruption and decorative repairs.
At L J Mullan Electrical, we always look at alternative solutions to provide the safest and most cost-effective installation possible. After assessing the property, we proposed installing a dedicated IP-rated external consumer unit.
Dedicated EV Charger Distribution Board
The external consumer unit was installed adjacent to the existing electrical equipment and provided a dedicated supply solely for the EV charger.
The installation included:
- Double-pole Type A RCBO protection
- Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD)
- Weatherproof IP-rated enclosure suitable for outdoor installation
- Dedicated circuit for the EV charger
This approach provided full compliance with current regulations while avoiding the expense of a complete consumer unit replacement.
By using a dedicated external distribution board, we were able to provide the customer with a safe, future-proof installation while keeping costs under control.
Neat Cable Routing Using D-Line Clips
One of the challenges with this installation was that part of the cable route would be visible from the front of the property.
Whenever cables are visible, appearance matters just as much as functionality.
To achieve a tidy finish, we used D-Line cable clips to secure the cable neatly along the brickwork. These clips provide a clean and professional appearance and help the cable blend in with the property as much as possible.
Careful planning of the cable route ensured the installation looked discreet whilst still providing easy access for maintenance and inspection if required in the future.
Why We Recommend Hypervolt EV Chargers
For this installation, the customer chose a Hypervolt EV charger.
Hypervolt has quickly become one of the UK’s most popular EV charger manufacturers, and it’s a product we regularly recommend to our customers.
Some of the reasons we like Hypervolt chargers include:
- Excellent build quality
- Smart app control
- Scheduled charging functionality
- Solar compatibility options
- Attractive design
- Reliable performance
The charger provides fast and convenient home charging while giving the customer full control through the Hypervolt app.
Fully Tested, Certified and Notified
Once the installation was complete, the EV charger circuit was fully inspected and tested to ensure compliance with BS 7671 requirements.
As a NAPIT registered electrician, all relevant certification was issued to the customer following completion of the work.
Where required, the installation was also notified to Building Control, giving the customer complete peace of mind that the work had been carried out correctly and in accordance with current regulations.
